Most mothers who contact us describe their son the same way. Smart. Capable. He just needs a foot in the door and the right support up front.
The men who come through this program are not lacking ambition or ability. What they have lacked is an environment that suits the way they think, and a pathway into employment built around how they actually learn.
The supermarket is that environment. What it produces goes well beyond a job:

Unger & Friends really stand out as an NDIS support provider. They genuinely focus on building individual capacity through highly personalised, professionally delivered services. Christian, in particular, is very experienced and incredibly patient, and you can tell he's truly dedicated to making a positive difference in people's lives. If you're looking for an NDIS provider that's both caring and highly effective, I can't recommend Unger & Friends enough. They really do an exceptional job.
Grocer Ready is built around one goal: getting young men with autism into real, paid supermarket employment and supporting them until they can hold that role entirely on their own. From day one, participants are on the floor, learning by doing, with one of our team alongside them. The program runs in structured stages until full independence is reached. Places are limited. Get in touch to find out if the program is the right fit for your son.
Before a placement is secured, the work has already begun. Building habits, routine, and work readiness before the first day in store.
The program builds the job. Social Nights builds the friendships. Real social settings, real connection, for young men who already have something in common.
Our team works shoulder to shoulder with participants, providing coaching support on the floor, in the job, and teaching through demonstration, patience, and genuine care.
The support coaches we bring into this program are not just experienced support workers. They are people who know what a good job inside a supermarket actually looks like and who are skilled enough to teach it. That combination of job knowledge and genuine investment in the individual is what makes the coaching work.
Our team leads by example and are present, hands on, and focused on one thing: making sure every young man gets to a point where he owns every shift he works.

Unger & Friends was built on a simple observation. Purpose and meaning in life are most reliably found through work. Not work as a means to an end, but work as something worth showing up for. Something that changes how you see yourself.
Christian spent several years managing teams across multiple Coles stores in Perth, working across every department, training staff, and learning what it actually takes to do the job well. When he moved into the disability sector, he kept seeing the same thing. Young men with genuine ability and genuine ambition, cycling through programs that were not built for them and arriving nowhere.
Grocer Ready was the natural response. A program built by someone who knows the environment from the inside, designed specifically for young men who are ready to work but have not yet had the right door opened for them.
Outside of the program, Christian has spent time living in Canada where he ran an organic and regenerative farm and is involved in the North Fremantle Social Farm. In his spare time he is an avid hiker, having completed the Bibbulmun Track end to end, the Cape to Cape, and the Stirling Range Ridge Walk
